FAQs
Some common questions...
Rain gutters are an integral part of a building’s water discharge system, designed to channel water away from the walls and foundation and towards a more suitable drainage site. Without gutters, your property risks water ingress, damage to fascia or siding, and an accumulation of excessive weight on the roof, as well as soil erosion, flooding or standing water around the foundation.
Seamless gutters are--as the name suggests--continuous lengths of material designed and manufactured on-site to match the specifications of the building. There are no partitions, no seams and no joints.
Seamless gutters are much longer-lasting and lower maintenance than traditional gutters. Since there are no seams or joints, there are fewer points of failure or potential leaks, and cleaning is much easier. Having the ability to custom-fit the gutter to your building’s needs also has the advantage of being more aesthetically pleasing.
Material type, color, building size and complexity are the primary factors for determining the cost of gutter installation or replacement. We’ll send a representative on-site to take measurements, discuss material and color preferences, and provide you with a free estimate in advance of any installation.
SGS offers four different material options for gutter installation, each with different benefits and use-cases:
-
Aluminum: Aluminum gutters are lightweight, versatile, rust-resistant, affordable, and have the added advantage of coming in a range of different colored protective enamels.
-
Galvanized Steel: Galvanized steel gutters are heavy-duty, easy to clean and less likely to sustain damage than aluminum gutters, though more challenging to install and less recommended for coastal properties where high salinity can deteriorate the protective coating.
-
Copper: Copper gutters, when properly installed and maintained, can last anywhere from 50-100 years and even raise the value of your property. Copper doesn’t rust, instead oxidizing over time to form a beautiful patina. While more expensive than aluminum or steel, the lower maintenance, longer lifespan and unique aesthetic might make it right for your property.
-
Wood: The benefits of a wooden gutter are its rustic elegance, its historic authenticity, its effectiveness at diverting water and its exceptional durability. Like copper, wood isn’t vulnerable to rust or corrosion and can last a long time, though it is recommended that they receive regular maintenance. Also like copper, wood gutters tend to run more expensive than aluminum or steel.
-
The two popular sizes of gutters are 5-inch and 6-inch, which is a bigger difference than it might sound. 6-inch gutters are capable of moving about 50% more water, so the question essentially boils down to the following factors:
-
Roof size
-
Roof pitch
-
Expected rainfall
The larger the surface areas of your roof planes and the steeper the roof, the more water it will displace and the larger your gutters will need to be. Generally speaking, if a typical roof is less than 800 square feet, 5-inch gutters will be adequate. The exception to this rule is if your roof is exceptionally steep, resulting in much faster water runoff. If your roof is more than 1,400 square feet, even if it’s not especially steep, it’s recommended to use 6-inch gutters.
Maine averages 42 inches of rain per year, putting it just over the median national average. But in 2022, we received about 50 inches, and in 2023, we received 54 inches; if you’re on the fence about which size is right for you and you don’t want to have to worry about changing weather patterns in the future, it may be worth upgrading to the larger size.
One more consideration is that your fascia may be as wide as 8 or even 10 inches, which means having a smaller gutter will leave more of it exposed. It may be both more aesthetically pleasing and result in less maintenance to go for 6-inch gutters in this case.
